Everything you need to know to get a visa to Malaysia for Russians in 2021: necessary documents, embassy addresses and advice on obtaining visas. Do you need it or can you visit the country without registering it? We answer all the questions in this article.

In 2021, a visa to Malaysia for Russians is not needed, provided that the visit to the country does not last more than 30 days. To enter, you must have the following documents with you:

  • passport with a margin of more than 6 months from the date of departure from the country and with blank pages;
  • tickets / reservations for round trip tickets with a closed date, or a ticket for a flight to a third country;
  • at least $ 500 per person - funds required to stay in the country.

In practice, of course, the last two points are rarely checked - they just look at the passport. However, it is better to have both tickets and the necessary funds - you never know.

At the checkpoint, the customs officer puts a stamp on which the date of entry and the date until which you are eligible for a visa-free stay in the country are indicated. In case of violation of the departure date, you face a fine. Also, the customs officer will take your index fingerprints.

Attention: When you visit Sarawak and Sabah (quite autonomous regions in Borneo), their local stamps will also be put in your passport. You do not need to issue any special permission to visit these regions. Verified by personal experience.

If children are traveling with you, pay attention to the following points:

  • Children under 14 years old can be entered in the parent's passport, over 14 years old are required to have their own.
  • A child under the age of 18 who enters the country without the parent (s) must have their consent to leave their home country.
  • To obtain an entry permit, the child's name must be indicated on the invitation.

Our personal experience. We have already visited Malaysia four times (read about the trip to Borneo). We always got a 30-day stamp in the passport without any problems. The availability of funds and return tickets was never checked with us, only once (during the third visit) they politely asked when we were going to leave the country, and even then only in order to make sure that we remember the need to leave after a month. ... The Malaysians are very polite and welcoming.

Where to find cheap tickets? This is most conveniently done using the search engines Aviasales and Skyscanner. To find the best price, check both at once and see tickets for different dates. Read also the instructions on how to search for cheap flights correctly.

Obtaining a visa to Malaysia in Russia in 2021

Russians can apply for a visa to Malaysia in 2021 in Russia if they have to travel for more than a month - in this case, you need to worry about getting it in advance. The Malaysian embassy is located in Moscow, a single-entry visa is issued for 2 months, which can then be extended for another 2 or 4 months, depending on its type and the reasons for its extension. The consular fee will be $ 10, the issuance period is on average 1 week.

Student and work visas cannot be obtained at the embassy, they are issued directly in Malaysia by the relevant authorities. Entry in this case is carried out on a general tourist basis, but with the appropriate documents, namely, an invitation from the university or from the place of work. It should be borne in mind that an invitation from a university can be obtained only by first enrolling there. Also, a work visa is issued first, only then can you start working, otherwise - a serious fine and deportation.

Extension of visa in Malaysia

There are two ways to extend a visa in Malaysia: apply to the immigration office or make a visa run (border run).

You must contact the immigration office a few days before the end of your stay in the country. Since the Malays are reluctant to extend their visas, you need a good enough reason. If you manage to convince the employee of the need to extend your stay, he will issue you a Special pass confirming your legal stay after the date of departure in your passport.

A visa-run in the country is a fairly easy way to extend an entry permit, popular with Russians and not only. It is enough to leave the country for a day, having received an exit stamp in your passport, and then come back. It is easiest for Russians to travel to Thailand, where they also do not need a visa. However, experienced tourists recommend using this method only a couple of times, then the customs officer may be suspicious of this and simply refuse entry.

Violation of the period of stay

In case of violation of the visa or visa-free period of legal stay in the country, you need to contact the same immigration center and present a flight ticket there. The customs law is quite strict, for each day of violation you will have to pay a fine of about $ 10, but if you have illegally stayed in the country for more than 30 days, this pleasure will cost you no less than $ 1000 (as of 2021).

If you try to leave the country by bypassing the immigration office, in addition to a fine, you will receive deportation and, as a result, problems with re-entering the country in the future.

Refusal to enter the country

A customs officer is likely to refuse entry to a woman with a third trimester pregnancy, with the exception of transit entry. Previously deported from the country will also receive a refusal. Problems can also arise due to irregularities in the passport, for example, there is no stamp on leaving the previous country of visit, or such a stamp is in one passport, and the second is used to enter Malaysia.

Obtaining a visa to Malaysia in other Asian countries

Despite the fact that there are embassies and representations of Malaysia in many neighboring Asian countries, Russians will not be able to get a visa there. For example, at the Malaysian Embassy in Sri Lanka, upon a request for a visa, you will be told that only citizens of Sri Lanka can get it, everyone else needs to contact the immigration offices located directly in Malaysia. In neighboring Thailand, the very possibility of obtaining a visa from them is not denied, however, they do not want to issue it to tourists, they directly advise using a border run. Apparently, the situation is explained by the government's rather democratic attitude towards tourism, facilitated entry into the country and the ability to "unofficially" extend their stay with the help of border runs.
